According to ABC News, a customer from New Jersey, Jayson Greenberg, reported to a manager that his bills did not add up and a few cents were missing.
The manager then said, “Oh it’s a computer program. It is just rounding numbers. It takes a little from certain receipts and gives a little to others. What do you want? A few pennies?”
A representative for Chipotle stated that it was a technique used to keep their long lines moving faster. Valuable time is wasted counting pennies in change, so they round to the nearest nickel.
Since this was made public, the company has stopped rounding bills up so they can gain the extra few cents, however they still round down for the customers benefit.
