A modern-day Juliet found herself facing the courts after a failed suicide attempt.
The 30-year-old Indian ended up with $270 fine after trying to kill herself when her parents refused to allow her to marry someone they considered in a lower class.
Instead, her parents refused to even discuss the matter.
7 Days in Dubai reported that in official records the woman stated, “they would not change their minds so I decided to commit suicide.”
She overdosed on 25 panadol and was rushed to hospital with a severe headache and continuous vomiting.
Suicide is illegal in Dubai, and those who try face a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a heavy fine.
When the woman admitted to trying to kill herself, she was charged by the Dubai Misdemeanor Court and fined $270.
Her brother told Gulf News, “My sister went through a nervous and emotional breakdown after they broke up. She suffered severe depression and underwent a treatment in India. We rushed her to hospital when she felt sick here. It was the first time that she ever tried to end her life.”
