A modern-day Juliet found herself facing the courts after a failed suicide attempt.

The 30-year-old Indian ended up with $270 fine after trying to kill herself when her parents refused to allow her to marry someone they considered in a lower class.


She had flown to Dubai, where her parents lived, in an attempt to convince them to approve of her union.
Instead, her parents refused to even discuss the matter.

7 Days in Dubai reported that in official records the woman stated, “they would not change their minds so I decided to commit suicide.”

She overdosed on 25 panadol and was rushed to hospital with a severe headache and continuous vomiting.
Suicide is illegal in Dubai, and those who try face a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a heavy fine.

When the woman admitted to trying to kill herself, she was charged by the Dubai Misdemeanor Court and fined $270.

Her brother told Gulf News, “My sister went through a nervous and emotional breakdown after they broke up. She suffered severe depression and underwent a treatment in India. We rushed her to hospital when she felt sick here. It was the first time that she ever tried to end her life.”
