Two parents criticized one university’s failure to notify them of their daughter’s death.

Jasmine Benjamin, a 17-year-old nursing student at Valdosta State University in Georgia, was found dead in her dorm room 15 hours after her estimated time of death.

James Jackson, Benjamin’s stepfather, expressed his outrage towards the university’s insensitivity, and claimed that him and his wife shouldn’t have had to find out about the incident through Facebook.

A spokesperson from Valdosta State claimed that the routine procedure for such a situation is to notify the police and parents of the victim as quickly as possible, but that the hearsay of social media worked past their capabilities.

The Huffington Post reported the Valdosta Police Department initially deemed the cause of death to be due to natural causes, but have since treated the case as a homicide investigation. The FBI and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have also gotten involved.

Brian Childress, an investigator with the Valdosta Police Department claimed that they have issued several search warrants, but failed to comment on the nature and outcome of those warrants
