In response to schools buckling down on what defines a threat, a young boy became a suspect.
As schools nationwide begin to redefine their policies on safety and security, 5-year-old Joseph Cardosa’s gun made out of Legos was deemed inappropriate and warranted a strike towards suspension at his Hyannis West Elementary’s after-school program.
Allegedly, he took several pieces and put them together to resemble a gun, and then pointed it at his friends.
He told Fox News “we were just walking around. And then he was just like ‘no, no, don’t shoot me’. And we were just pretending.”
Joseph’s mother, in his defense, recalled her own playtime as a child and remembers very clearly that such behavior was innocent and make-believe.
However, times are gravely different and the school system felt they needed to take serious action to send the right message.
For now, Joseph only faces the potential of suspension, outlined in a letter to his parents, and is still enrolled as long as he stays in line with the school’s updated policies.
