All eastbound lanes of Interstate 4 remain closed at Interstate 75 in Tampa after a fatal shooting Saturday afternoon.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, gunshots were fired from one car at another along I-4 just after 3 p.m. Deputies, as well as Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a call about shots fired along the interstate a short time later.
Officials said that call came from a man who said someone was following him. According to deputies, a 911 call received just before 3 p.m. was from a man who said he was being followed near 50th Street and Columbus Drive by someone who pulled up next to him and flashed a gun.
The 911 caller said he was still being followed by a grey Ford Taurus with tinted windows when he pulled onto Interstate 4 eastbound.
According to deputies, the caller said he had done nothing to cause someone to follow him. The caller stayed on the phone with 911 operators and the dispatchers heard multiple gunshots.
The victim, who was driving a Ford Mustang, pulled over and the Taurus left the area. The victim died at the scene.
Officials have not released the identity of the person killed, only saying he was not from Hillsborough County.
Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office continue to investigate the scene. Officials said witnesses did see someonw in the Taurus fire multiple shots at the Mustang.
Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said authorities are working hard to discover who the gunman was and why the shooting happened.
Traffic is being diverted off the interstate at an earlier exit as deputies said the roadway would be closed for several hours.
