The man was sitting in his car in the 600 block of South 16th Street around 4 a.m. when he was approached by a person armed with a handgun, said Detective Carmen Rivera.
The armed person demanded that the driver open the car door, Rivera said.
When the driver refused, the suspect fired a single shot into the vehicle, hitting the victim once, the detective added.
The victim, who sustained a non life-threatening injury, drove himself to a local hospital, Rivera said.
Police went to the scene of the shooting and later found the victim at the hospital, authorities added. Man shot while sitting in car in Newark’s South Ward | NJ.com
