A Florida boy was wounded last week after he accidentally discharged his father’s handgun while looking for a snack.
The off-duty Clay County deputy, whose name was not released, was eating Thursday with his son at Wendy’s in Middleburg when the child reached into his pants pocket.
That jostled the deputy’s handgun, which he owned privately and was not a service weapon, and caused it to fire inside the eatery.
The child was injured by a bullet fragment that ricocheted off the floor and cut his legs and foot, investigators said.
A Wendy’s employee also suffered minor injuries from bullet fragments but declined medical treatment.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy’s work status was not affected by the incident.
