A 26-year-old Connecticut man is under arrest after police say he drove a stolen car to a phony probation meeting and may have used the vehicle in a bank robbery.Gary Harding was arrested Monday after he was asked to come in and meet with probation officers. He showed up driving a Honda that he allegedly carjacked from a woman in a supermarket parking lot.
"Thank God people aren't always very bright, it really does make our job a lot easier," said New Haven Police spokesman David Hartman. "Not only to make the apprehension, but then to also have the main piece of evidence delivered right to us ... that was icing on the cake."
The car was stolen Sept. 13 and its theft was captured on video. The footage was shown to local probation officers, who identified Harding.
Authorities are also investigating Harding for a bank robbery that occurred two days after the carjacking. The same Honda may have been the getaway car, police said.
After seeing the carjacking video, police and Harding's probation officer set up the fake meeting and asked Harding to come in.
That he did.
