Pueblo police confirm an armed man was shot and killed by an officer Tuesday evening, but are not saying what led up to the shooting.

The police department says officers and Pueblo County deputies had been sent to the area of Troy and 4th Street Tuesday to search for a person of interest in an assault that had happened one day earlier. The assault happened a few miles away from where officers were searching on Tuesday, and left a 23-year-old man in serious condition at a local hospital.

Around 6:30 p.m., law enforcement were at the Loaf 'n Jug at the corner of 4th and Troy when they encountered an armed man. Authorities aren't saying what happened next, but a witness told 11 News she heard yelling, followed by several gunshots.

"I was here [across the street from convenience store] working...heard tires screeching so I came up to the front, behind the counter, and we just heard somebody screaming. ... I'm not sure who it was screaming, 'Get your hands up,' or, 'Get out of the car,' or something like that. All of a sudden, we started hearing gunshots and you could see the light from the gun," Arinada Ravera recalled.

Ravera said there were children around as everything unfolded.

"We had customers coming in and they had children, so we were telling everyone to get down and we got down as well."

Ravera told 11 News she heard between seven and 10 gunshots. Authorities have not confirmed her account.

Police are not saying if the man shot was the person of interest they were looking for prior to the shooting.

Officers remained on scene through the night, finally clearing around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. While there, investigators with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation marked pieces of evidence on and around two vehicles parked in the Loaf 'n Jug parking lot: a car that had driven up onto the sidewalk and up against the side of the building, and a SUV blocking that car.

The officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice.

This is the third officer-involved shooting for the Pueblo Police Department this year.
