UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) --
Suspect Tyrelle Shaw, who was wanted in a string of four attacks on Asian women, was found hanging in the elevator shaft inside 766 Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side on Monday.
The neighbors reported the smell for the past three days.
"Smells horrible. Came in quarter to 9, smelled terrible in elevator and still does," a resident said.
It was the stench, the horrible odor which grew worse by the day, which eventually helped solve this case.
"Smelled like something died. Bad," a resident said.
And that's exactly what police found there at 766 Madison Ave. by 66th Street.
Monday night authorities confirmed the body of a 25-year-old Tyrelle Shaw was found hanging in the elevator shaft.
Shaw had been wanted for a string of violent, frightening attacks on Asian women.
In the last two weeks, detectives believe he struck victims in Manhattan, punching the unsuspecting victims in the face.
As for a motive for these targeted attacks, it may have been a desperate violent reaction to rejection.
In his blog he wrote, "Truthfully, I feel so much better after hitting an Asian woman in the face with a steel rod. It was the greatest achievement of my life."
As for the connection to this exclusive part of the Upper East Side, Karen Bennett believe Shaw used to be a squatter in the building, until he was caught last October.
The locks were changed, but clearly he found a way back in until his body was removed by the coroner's office Monday afternoon.
"The only positive thing to come out of this, there will be no more victims," a resident said.
Shaw also posted in his blog that he was going to commit suicide.
